Our Lakes Are Our Business – Stop Invasive Species Spread

A DNR grant to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, particularly Eurasian water milfoil, zebra mussels and spiny water flea is funding radio ads, a Highway 18 billboard, training for the Sheriff’s water patrol, a survey of private boat launches, and mailing of prevention materials to property owners to target boaters in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The project is a partnership of the Crow Wing Lake and Rivers Alliance (LARA), Crow Wing County Sheriff’s department, Anglers for Habitat, and the Brainerd Lakes Chamber.

I was pleased to record a radio ad on behalf of the Chamber with the message that our lakes are our business! The consistent preventive focus and message of the campaign to boaters is: clean, drain, dray and an awareness of a new law that requires the draining of water from all boats leaving public waters, not just infested waters as the law previously required.

  12. Great initiative protecting Brainerd Lakes! Key to success is consistent messaging and community involvement. Ensuring everyone cleans, drains, and dries their boats is crucial. Makes you think, are islands in Poptropica also vulnerable to invasive species? Education and enforcement are essential for preserving these beautiful waters for future generations.

  13. Have you ever seen the impact of invasive species firsthand? Absolutely! Years ago, I witnessed a local lake choked by weeds, impacting fishing and boating. Thankfully, local efforts restored it. It's vital to keep raising awareness about these issues. Do you remember the pacman 30th anniversary ?

  14. Have you ever dealt with invasive species affecting your favorite lake? I actually volunteered at a local cleanup last summer, pulling Eurasian water milfoil – it was surprisingly exhausting! I hope this outreach program makes a difference in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Speaking of outreach, has anyone played basket random lately?
